Portogruaro is a fluvial city on the banks of the Lemene river. It is characterised by the long porticos which line the main streets and its Venetian heritage is reflected in the palaces, winding streets and alleyways. The river Lemene, navigable all the way from Portoguaro to the lagoon at Caorle, established the town as an important river port and commercial centre over the centuries.
